Scope
The proposed project contributes to the development of a MSc Module that can bring forward a Transport Safe System approach through the transnational educational opportunities. The structure of the proposed module identifies and elaborates three work streams including Road Safety, Rail safety and Safety of vulnerable rail and road users. These work streams were defined to addresses areas of studies including infrastructure, vehicles, traffic management capacity, and human factors & behaviour.
Project Significance
The project’s importance is rooted in its specialized approach to dealing with various elements of transport safety through offered courses. It aims to tackle the concerning issue of rail and road traffic injuries, which have notable emotional, social, and economic effects on individuals, nations, and the global community. In response to this growing concern, the United Nations launched a decade-long campaign for road safety (2011-2020), urging global governments to take action in reducing the rising number of road traffic fatalities and injuries. The UN introduced a comprehensive plan featuring five core areas: road safety management, improved road infrastructure and mobility, advancement of vehicle safety, encouragement of safer road user behaviors, and effective post-crash response strategies. The courses offered will go through the objectives outlined by the United Nations, addressing various aspects of traffic safety through specialized educational programs.
Developing countries encounter deep-seated issues in the management of road safety, and a lack of an effective automated system exacerbates this deficit. Additionally, the absence of a designated lead agency for road safety, equipped with legal authority, has resulted in a lack of accountability and disorganization among government stakeholders.
