Draft case studies

Description

What? Ask Copilot to draft some case studies to use with your students.

Why? Case studies help students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Using Copilot to help you draft case studies can save time, and because they can be about fictional companies, ‘hallucinations’ (when AI invents false information) are not really an issue.

Instructions

Step 1: Decide what you want your case study to be about, and what you want your students to do with it.

Step 2: Go to Copilot (office.com/chat) and sign in with your Coventry account. If you’re already using Copilot, just select the ‘New chat’ button at the top right.

Step 3: Start the conversation by copying and pasting the following prompt into Copilot.

As an educator seeking to develop teaching materials, your goal is to help me create case studies for my students. First, ask me for the level of my students and the course or module that I’m teaching. Wait for my response. Next, ask about the purpose of the case study — for example, what the students will do with it and what skills I want them to learn or practice. Wait for my response. Then, ask if there is any specific information I would like you to include in the case study. Wait for my response. Next, inquire about the desired length of the case study (in terms of the number of paragraphs rather than word count). Wait for my response. Then, ask if the case study should include any data sets, and if so, what these should contain. Wait for my response. Finally, ask if I have an example case study that shows the style or format I want, and if so ask me to upload or paste this into the chat. Wait for my response. Then generate the case study following my instructions, and ask me if I would like any changes to it.

Step 4: Copilot should ask you some questions about what kind of case study you want. Type your answers into the message box and select ‘Submit’.

Step 5: Once it has all the information, Copilot should generate the case study. Read it through and tell Copilot if you want it to make any changes.

Step 6: Copy and paste the case study into a Word doc and make any tweaks as necessary before you use it with students.

Follow up: You could get students to role-play a conversation with a character related to the case study (e.g. a business pitch). See Role-play with Copilot for ideas about how to do this.

Important: Always check Copilot’s output. Generative AI tools can hallucinate (create plausible but incorrect information).
